Scientists have revealed new insights into the life and death of black holes. Their findings dispel the so-called firewall paradox which shocked the physics community when it was announced in 2012

A black hole firewall is a hypothetical phenomenon where an observer falling into a black hole encounters high-energy quanta at (or near) the event horizon. The “firewall” phenomenon was proposed in 2012 by Ahmed Almheiri , Donald Marolf , Joseph Polchinski , and James Sully [1] as a possible solution to an apparent inconsistency in black hole complementarity .
In this special Ri event, science writer Jennifer Ouellette and physicist Sean Carroll explore the black hole firewall paradox, the exotic physics that underlies the new theory and what the paradox tells us about how new scientific theories are proposed, tested and accepted.

Regarding the black hole information paradox, observer complementarity allowed in-falling information to be cloned at the horizon without any violation of quantum mechanics.
You might wonder who cares, especially if encountering a black hole is not on your calendar. But some of the basic tenets of modern science and of Einstein’s theory are at stake in the “firewall paradox…

I don’t know, the paper is quite long and I don’t understand most of it. But personally I much prefer the solution of the information paradox as outlined in this paper: Classical Structure at the Horizon of a Black Hole.
This version of the paradox arises long before a black hole completely evaporates, seems to be the version that has played a central role in quantum gravity, and is genuinely paradoxical. After ex- plicating the paradox, I discuss the implications of more recent work on AdS/CFT duality and on the ‘Firewall paradox’, and conclude that the paradox is if anything now sharper. The other assumption overturned by the new research is that black holes have no “hair” – a term coined by John Wheeler to refer to any information about a black-hole’s make-up besides its total mass, charge and angular momentum.

The black hole rewall paradox suggests that an observer falling into an old black hole must see a violation of locality, unitarity, or the equivalence principle.
Black holes are involved because they represent the meeting of GR and QM, as both theories can apply in those regions. A large part of the firewall paradox argument is based around the notion of monogamous quantum entanglement: that is, you can only have one kind of entanglement at a time.
THE BLACK HOLE FIREWALL PROBLEM. INFORMATION PARADOX
The actual argument is more complicated but basically the idea is the firewalls are necessary in order for black hole evaporation to be unitary and for effective field theory to be valid just outside the black hole. For what it’s worth I think that it is probably wrong anyway though.
29/05/2014 · All black holes have an event horizon (EH), which is the point of no return (gravitationally speaking). Once you pass the EH, you cannot escape the pull of the black hole and as you get nearer and nearer the black hole you will be stretched out in a process called “spaghettification.”

Perhaps the information encoded slips out with the Hawking radiation, but this idea runs into another problem: it leads to the black hole being surrounded by a “firewall” of blazing, energetic particles, again something general relativity forbids.

Black Hole Information Firewall Paradox Explained Professor Stephen Hawking has said that a black hole with a true point of no-return for information, known as the ‘event horizon’, from which nothing can escape may be incompatible with general relativity and quantum theory.
It would seem then that either the physical information of an object is lost when it falls into a black hole (information paradox) or objects are vaporized before entering a black hole (firewall
A black hole firewall is a hypothetical phenomenon where an observer falling into a black hole encounters high-energy quanta at (or near) the event horizon.
But despite the collective angst, even the firewall’s fiercest detractors have yet to find a satisfactory solution to the conundrum. Joe Polchinski , one of the authors who published the paper on the blackhole firewall paradox, has a more technical write up of the subject over on Cosmic Variance .
black hole so that we had a normal surface at the horizon, instead of just a vacuum region, then we would evade Hawking’s paradox. But such an alteration is hard to obtain, for a simple reason.
This apparent loss of unitary at the end of black hole evaporation has been dubbed the information loss paradox. A great deal of effort has been spent in devising possible scenarios to preserve unitarity in the context of black hole evaporation [see Fig. 1 for a flowchart].
